2023 Nationwide Children’s Champions Custom Designed Package

Meet 7 year old Logan, Pokemon hunter, athlete and Nationwide Children’s Patient Champion. Logan designed the Charqui Jerky 2023 commemorative bags that will be sold at Columbus, Ohio area retailers and
the Memorial Tournament
presented by Workday.

7-year-old Logan is everywhere. One day, you might find him on the baseball diamond, and the next eh’s practicing karate. When he’s not doing one of those, he’s trying to catch Pokemon in his neighborhood. You never would guess that at 19 days old, Logan was diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease and had a balloon valvuloplasty at 5 months old.

Logan has yearly check-ups with The Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and fortunately has not needed additional interventions although a possible valve replacement is in Logan’s future.

In January 2021, Logan was hospitalized and diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This condition can be very frightening for families but Logan’s mom, Lisa shares that the staff has been amazing, always educating and answering questions they have. Logan’s family shared that some members of the Endocrinology team are also Type 1 Diabetics and they bring real-life experiences to the expert care they provide.

Keep catching those Pokemon, Logan. We salute you, kids like you and the many great healthcare providers and admin staff at Nationwide Children’s Hospital who support our community in the best way possible!

Charqui Jerky Co. has partnered with former Ohio State Buckeye All-American Left Tackle and projected 2023 NFL first round draft pick, Paris Johnson, Jr. to create a custom beef jerky called Paris’ Cut - sweet and smoky bbq jerky. A portion of proceeds from the sale of Paris’ Cut will benefit the Paris Johnson Jr. Foundation and 2nd & 7.

About the Paris Johnson Jr. Foundation
The Paris Johnson Jr. Foundation was founded in 2018 by Paris Johnson Jr. and his family. Paris is a 2x Scholar Athlete, Second-team all–Big Ten, Academic all-Big Team, and starting Offensive Lineman for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Foundation is dedicated to empowering and serving disabled veterans, local hospitals and disadvantaged student athletes with dignity and respect. These goals are accomplished by ensuring that disabled veterans, student athletes and their families can obtain helpful resources that benefit them.  Through the family’s faith, and desire to elevate those who need it most, they created the foundation to help lift Ohio communities and beyond. The Foundation’s programs were designed to assist with necessary services that kids or adults living in the most underserved, high-risk communities lost before and after the pandemic - including a safe haven free from the growing issues of poverty, drugs, and violence. About 2nd & 7
2nd & 7 was started in 1999 by three former Ohio State Buckeye football players—Ryan Miller, Luke Fickell, and Mike Vrabel. Inspired by their involvement in various community outreach programs as former student-athletes, they decided to continue to make a difference by promoting literacy and providing positive role models for children in central Ohio.  Over the past 23 years, the program has grown to nearly 200 communities in 26 states. The “Tackling Illiteracy” program encourages student-athletes from universities and high schools across the nation to participate in weekly readings in second-grade classrooms. While in the classrooms, they are reading to the kids, passing out FREE books for the kids to take home and reminding the kids why it is so important to read. 2nd & 7 created its own book series featuring a group of friends called the Hog Mollies; each book teaches valuable life lessons. In the fall of 2022, we will distribute our 15th book in that series - The Hog Mollies and Ike & Ivy's Ice Cream Shop.

Student-athletes from universities and high schools across the nation are a huge part of our program. They are out in the schools each week, reading to kids, handing out books, and reminding the 2nd graders why reading is so important. They also use the themes in the Hog Mollies books to reiterate valuable life lessons.

Our focus is to encourage 2nd graders to become readers. Studies have shown that if children are not reading well by the end of 2nd grade, there is trouble ahead. We are committed to getting books in the hands of children who need them the most. For many kids we visit, the book we give them may be the only book they have at home.

Our volunteer role models encourage 2nd graders to try their best in school, do their homework, respect their teachers and classmates and READ EVERY NIGHT.
